DON’T BE BLIND SIDED!

Automobile manufacturers are making blind-spot detection systems increasingly available. These technologically advanced systems use cameras or radar to check adjoining lanes for vehicles that might otherwise escape drivers’ view. Until vehicle owners can avail themselves of these blind-spot warning systems, they are advised to follow the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommendations for adjusting their mirrors. According to the SAE, the side mirrors should be set so far outward that their viewing angles only slightly overlap the image provided by the central rearview mirror in the cabin. These setting positions may be a bit disorienting to drivers who are used to seeing the flanks of their own car in their side mirrors, but the settings do eliminate blind spots.
